The government has pledged to expedite efforts to restore electricity in the Northern region. The Minister of Power announced that full restoration is expected within the next 14 days. However, there was a discrepancy in the timeline provided by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, which suggested a shorter timeframe for repairs. Despite challenges such as vandalism and security threats, progress is being made to repair the damaged transmission lines. The focus is on restoring power to 17 affected states and implementing measures to prevent future vandalism. Additionally, there are calls for stricter penalties to deter vandalism and a ban on the sale of metal scrap to combat infrastructure damage. The Minister clarified that improvements in power supply are not solely due to the rainy season but also stem from increased generation capacity from sources like gas-fired thermal stations. Plans are underway to enhance power generation further, ensuring stability even during the dry season.
