179 oil theft incidents uncovered in one week – NNPCL

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited recently revealed the discovery of 179 incidents of crude oil theft within a week. The company emphasized the ongoing battle against oil theft and vandalism, highlighting collaborative efforts in safeguarding oil infrastructure. Surveillance footage released by the NNPC captured multiple incidents occurring between January 11 and 17 in the Niger Delta region, including illegal pipeline connections and refineries. Various entities, including security agencies and oil companies, were commended for their joint efforts in combating these illegal activities.

Security forces in Bayelsa and Abia States successfully detected and repaired illegal pipeline connections, while illegal refineries in Rivers and Abia States were dismantled. Additionally, hidden storage sites linked to illicit activities were uncovered and demolished in Rivers and Abia. Unfortunately, incidents of sabotage resulted in oil spills, including damage to pipelines and wellheads in Rivers.

Security teams intercepted vehicles transporting stolen crude oil in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Abia, and seized wooden boats carrying stolen oil on waterways. The reported incidents were spread across different corridors in the region, with arrests made and suspects handed over for further investigation. The NNPC reiterated its commitment to combating oil theft until it is completely eradicated.

Notably, it was reported that 128 illegal refineries were discovered in the first two weeks of the year, with a significant number of illegal pipeline connections and refineries uncovered in the Niger Delta region between January 4 and 10. The continued prevalence of oil theft has hindered Nigeria’s ability to meet its annual oil production targets.
