200 corps members queried for absenteeism, not Christmas carol – NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps has refuted claims that it reprimanded 200 corps members in Oyo State for taking part in a Christmas carol event. Reports circulating online alleged that these corps members were queried for missing the event held on December 20, 2024. However, the NYSC spokesperson clarified that no such action was taken, emphasizing the organization’s respect for the religious rights of all corps members and its commitment to promoting unity and tolerance.

The clarification was issued in response to rumors of disciplinary actions against corps members for their involvement in religious activities. The spokesperson explained that the queries were actually related to the corps members’ absence during scheduled Community Development Service activities, the headcount in December 2024, and their failure to obtain permission for out-of-state travel during the holiday period. These actions were in line with the NYSC’s rules and regulations for enforcing penalties when necessary.

It was emphasized that participation in Community Development Service activities is mandatory for corps members and a requirement for obtaining the Certificate of National Service. The NYSC operates transparently and encourages fair reporting of its activities. The public was urged to disregard misleading online reports aimed at stirring unnecessary religious tensions.
