21 mini-grid projects ongoing in Jigawa – REA

The Rural Electrification Agency is currently overseeing 21 mini-grid projects in Jigawa State as part of the Nigeria Electrification Programme. These projects aim to provide electricity to over 300,000 individuals. The Managing Director of REA mentioned that the state has the potential to immediately electrify one million consumers through solar mini-grids, which could significantly boost socioeconomic growth and attract investment.

During a meeting with the State Governor, the REA provided insights on the electricity market in Jigawa State. The agency emphasized its commitment to implementing cost-effective electrification strategies supported by data and sustainable practices.

The agency also identified communities with high energy demands for agricultural activities in the state. The Governor signed a Memorandum of Understanding with REA to unlock renewable energy potential and welcomed Renewable Energy Service Companies for strategic partnerships.

The Governor praised the forward-looking policies related to the 2023 Electricity Act and highlighted the vast opportunities for renewable energy projects in Jigawa State. An official from the Nigeria Electrification Programme discussed the progress of the World Bank-funded Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up, which aims to energize millions of Nigerians.

Efforts are being made to enhance private sector financing for renewable energy initiatives. The Rural Electrification Fund Executive Director outlined plans to focus on renewable energy projects in various sectors to boost state revenues.

Over the years, REA has successfully implemented various off-grid energy solutions in Jigawa State, benefiting the local populace.
