800 Abuja airport taxis to get CNG makeover — Official

The initiative to convert 800 vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja aims to lower transport costs. The Programme Director/Chief Executive, Mr Michael Oluwagbemi, announced this agreement, which includes a 30% discount on airport shuttle fares once the conversion is completed.

The conversion aligns with a commitment to convert one million commercial vehicles to alleviate high transportation costs caused by increased fuel prices. Upon converting 50% of the airport taxi fleet, the 30% discount will be implemented, ensuring fair pricing based on destination distances.

The initiative has partnered with accredited centers for conversions and expanded refilling stations in Abuja. Despite concerns about CNG vehicle safety following an incident in Edo State, Oluwagbemi reassured the public that properly converted CNG vehicles with certified cylinders are safe and explosion-proof.

The Spokesman for the airport taxi operators, Aliyu Abdulaziz-Aliyu, expressed gratitude for the government’s support in transitioning their vehicles to CNG, anticipating a significant reduction in airport taxi fares as a result of the program.
