JUST IN: Over 150 passengers missing in Niger boat accident

A tragic boat accident in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has left approximately 150 passengers missing. The boat, carrying over 300 passengers, mainly women and children, capsized during a journey for a Maulid celebration. The passengers were traveling from Mundi Community to Gbajibo Community for the festival when the accident occurred.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident and stated that rescue efforts were underway to find more survivors. The boat accident happened on the night of October 1, 2024, along the River Niger, upstream of Jebba Dam at Gbajibo Community in Mokwa LGA.

The emergency response is being coordinated by NSEMA in collaboration with the State Ministry of Transport, Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and community volunteers. Thanks to the quick action of local volunteers, over 150 individuals have been rescued alive.

The search and rescue operation continues, and updates will be shared with the public as more survivors are located.
