The House of Representatives issued a call to the Federal Ministries of Water Resources and Environment to instruct the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency to implement measures to prevent flooding nationwide. They also urged the Federal Government to start desilting major dams and rivers to avoid excessive flooding, following recent devastating floods in several states. These resolutions stemmed from a motion introduced by a Bauchi State lawmaker, stressing the importance of dredging Nigeria’s water bodies to protect farmers and their crops from flood damage. The lawmaker highlighted the need for proper drainage systems like those in developed countries to enhance food security, environmental preservation, and economic growth. He expressed concerns over recurrent floods causing significant agricultural losses and debt among farmers. In response, the House mandated relevant committees to work with government ministries to propose solutions and address these challenges within four weeks.
