A 64-year-old estate agent, known as Sunday Asibe but also called John Asibe, was brought before the Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos State by the Nigeria Police. He is facing charges of fraud, obtaining money by pretence, and stealing. The police alleged that between February and May 2024, Asibe defrauded a man of N13m in the Igando area of Lagos State.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Cyriacus Osuji, stated that Asibe fraudulently obtained the money from the victim, Alhaji Suleiman Bawale, promising to sell him a plot of land. Asibe collected N8m and N5m in two separate transactions but failed to deliver the promised land.
The prosecutor detailed that Asibe stole N8m in February and later obtained an additional N5m in May under false pretenses. The charges against Asibe contravene specific sections of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
During the court session presided over by Magistrate Feyikemi George, Asibe pleaded not guilty to the charges. Magistrate George granted him bail set at N1m, requiring two sureties to provide three months’ bank statements with a minimum balance of N1m and verified addresses. The case was adjourned to October 30, 2024, for further proceedings.
