China recently conducted military exercises near Taiwan, stating that the drills were a warning to those seeking independence on the island. The drills, known as Joint Sword-2024B, focused on testing joint operations capabilities and included sea-air combat readiness patrol, blockade exercises, and assaults on maritime and ground targets. The Chinese coast guard also conducted patrols around Taiwan, with fleets encircling the island.
Taiwan condemned the exercises as irrational and provocative, responding by dispatching appropriate forces. The Taiwanese defense ministry emphasized its readiness to defend national security. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, known for his strong stance on sovereignty, vowed to resist annexation and stressed the autonomy of Taiwan from Beijing.
China’s military activities around Taiwan have increased in recent years, with frequent warplane and naval vessel presence. Chinese state media warned of consequences for provocations from Taiwan. Despite the tensions, residents in Taipei appeared unfazed by the latest drills, citing familiarity with such exercises.
The longstanding dispute between China and Taiwan originated from a civil war in 1949, leading to Taiwan’s autonomy with its own government and military. Beijing has worked to isolate Taiwan internationally, limiting its participation in global forums.
