The Governor of Kebbi State has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 for civil servants, while the Governor of Akwa Ibom State has approved a minimum wage of N80,000 for public civil servants. The labor unions in both states have praised the governors for this decision. The Nigerian Labour Congress in Kebbi State commended the governor for the approval, stating that the new wage will be effective immediately, with payments starting in October.
In Akwa Ibom State, an implementation committee chaired by the state Head of Civil Service has been formed to ensure a smooth transition to the new wage structure. The committee is tasked with delivering a report within one month. The involvement of labor unions in the committee demonstrates the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the wage implementation.
While workers in Kebbi and Akwa Ibom celebrate the new wage packages, civil servants in Sokoto State are still awaiting action from their government. The NLC leadership in Sokoto State expressed frustration over the delay in approving a new minimum wage, stating that they had given the state government a deadline to respond.
