The representative for the Governor of Osun State, Olawale Rasheed, emphasized that the restriction on trucks passing Olaiya Flyover in Osogbo was a precautionary measure. This statement was made in response to accusations made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
During a press conference by the former Commissioner for Works, Mr. Oluremi Omowaiye, from the Osun APC, allegations were made against Adeleke regarding plans to demolish the flyover out of animosity towards his predecessor, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola. Omowaiye requested the technical report used by Adeleke to enforce the ban on trucks using the flyover, stating that quality tests were conducted at every stage of the bridge construction.
Rasheed refuted claims of political bias by the APC leaders and clarified that Adeleke’s decision to ban heavy-duty trucks from the Olaiya bridge was solely for public safety and not to demolish the bridge. The State Security Council, alarmed by the increased presence of trailers and heavy-duty trucks on Osun roads, supported this decision.
Rasheed highlighted the governor’s responsibility to protect public assets and residents, especially with recent concerns about the bridge’s condition. Various technical reports and assessments had indicated the deteriorating state of the bridge, prompting the need for immediate action to ensure safety.
As ongoing technical reviews continue, the influx of heavy-duty trucks due to road closures in the region necessitated proactive measures to prevent any accidents. The decision to restrict trailers from using the bridge was made in the interest of public safety, as discussed in a State Security Council meeting involving security service commanders.
Overall, the actions taken regarding the Olaiya bridge were focused on safeguarding public welfare and ensuring the structural integrity of the bridge amidst evolving circumstances.
