The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has initiated the formation of a committee consisting of legal experts with the aim of reviewing and updating outdated Nigerian laws. This initiative is a significant step towards enhancing the rule of law and ensuring access to justice within the country.
During the inauguration of the committee in Abuja, the Attorney General emphasized the importance of keeping the laws of the federation up to date, highlighting that the last update was in 2004. The committee, led by Mr. Olawale Fapohunda (SAN) and co-chaired by Prof. Jummai Audi, has been tasked with coordinating the collection, compilation, and editing of the laws up to 2024.
The committee’s responsibilities include identifying outdated laws, harmonizing conflicting legislation, eliminating redundancies, and preparing a comprehensive report for the Attorney General. The Attorney General stressed the need to focus on modernizing laws to align with current needs and values, promoting uniformity, and consistency within the legal framework.
This endeavor is part of the government’s commitment to promoting the rule of law and enhancing access to justice, ultimately supporting socio-economic growth and legal reforms. The Attorney General expressed his personal dedication to this project and thanked the committee for accepting the challenge.
