A prominent member of a political party has expressed strong disapproval of the arrest and arraignment of over 70 protesters, including minors, who participated in the recent protest against bad governance in Nigeria. The protesters were charged with serious offenses like treason and incitement to mutiny. The video of the minors appearing malnourished in court has sparked outrage.
The political figure criticized the treatment of the minors as “despicable”, “disgraceful”, and “shameful”, calling for more humane actions towards them. He questioned the decision to detain the minors and bring them to a regular court instead of a juvenile court.
He also pointed out the root cause of the country’s problems, linking them to the mismanagement of the electoral process by the electoral commission. Although he disapproved of military intervention in governance, he acknowledged the discontent that leads some to consider it due to the perceived failures of the current government.
The call for fair and just electoral processes was emphasized, highlighting the importance of people’s participation in electing their leaders to ensure accountability. The organizers of the protests have pledged to continue their advocacy despite the charges laid against them, demanding better governance for the people of Nigeria.
