Kwara gov approves bonus for civil servants amid tax controversy

In a recent development, the Governor of Kwara State has authorized a special financial bonus equivalent to the monthly PAYE obligation for all civil servants in the state, including those at the Local Government level. This measure, announced by the Commissioner for Finance, is intended to provide support for workers for a minimum of three months.

The bonus aims to help alleviate any financial strain caused by the correct implementation of the PAYE deduction in alignment with the Personal Income Tax Act. Effective from October and continuing through December 2024, this initiative is seen as a significant gesture by the Governor to assist the state workforce during this period.

Following concerns raised by organized labor groups regarding high taxes deducted from workers’ salaries due to the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, the State Administrative Committee of the labor unions has called for a reversal of the new tax regime and urged the inclusion of pensioners in the wage increase.

Additionally, workers are reminded to register with the Kwara State Residents’ Registration Agency to be eligible for the bonus in November and December. The Finance Commissioner also mentioned arrangements for the refund of a special levy and the temporary suspension of further deductions until a later notice.

The Governor’s decision to provide this financial relief underscores his compassion and dedication to the welfare of the Kwara state workforce, as emphasized by the Commissioner for Finance.
