A group of academic technologists from a university in Nigeria protested the delayed payment of their salaries and allowances by the government. The technologists gathered on the campus, holding placards with messages demanding their entitlements. They accused the government of not honoring an agreement made in 2009 and expressed their determination to continue the protest until their dues were settled.
The chairman of the technologists’ association highlighted that salaries were withheld during a strike in 2022, with only one month’s payment made so far. Despite efforts to engage with the government, the technologists stated that their grievances remained unresolved. The government was also criticized for owing allowances as per the 2009 agreement, including the occupational hazard allowance.
An ex-union secretary emphasized the lack of staff in university laboratories nationwide, stressing the need for more recruitment to alleviate the workload and prevent further strain on existing employees. The technologists called on the government to address these issues promptly for the well-being of the academic workforce.
