President Tinubu has directed that Nigeria’s national flags be flown at half-mast for seven days to mourn the passing of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. The directive was conveyed through a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga. The late army chief, appointed in June 2023, passed away on Tuesday night after an illness. President Tinubu expressed his condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, honoring Lt Gen Lagbaja’s contributions to the nation.
Following the announcement, the Federal Executive Council meeting was rescheduled. The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, announced the postponement to honor General Lagbaja’s memory. Vice President Kashim Shettima led council members in observing a minute’s silence in tribute to the departed army chief.
Various officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and Ministers of Defence, expressed regret over Lagbaja’s passing and highlighted his significant contributions to the nation. The acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, mourned his predecessor’s demise, emphasizing Lagbaja’s dedication and selfless service to Nigeria.
Governors from different states also expressed their condolences and praised Lt Gen Lagbaja’s service and dedication to the country. The Ilobu Community in Osun State decided to suspend its annual celebrations to honor the late army chief, a native of the town.
Lt Gen Lagbaja’s distinguished military career, which began in 1987, included various leadership roles in internal security operations. He was known for his courage, professionalism, and commitment to Nigeria’s security. Lagbaja, an alumnus of the US Army War College, left behind his wife, Mariya, and two children.
