A 22-year-old schoolteacher at a school in Egbeda, Lagos, has been arrested for allegedly committing a heinous act on a 10-year-old boy. The teacher reportedly coerced the boy into a secluded area of the school where the incident took place. Prior to the crime, the teacher had promised the boy participation in a non-existent competition with the lure of winning a large sum of money.
An eyewitness disclosed that the teacher instructed the boy to act in a certain way before assaulting him and threatening him to keep it a secret. The suspect was caught in the act with another student, leading to his arrest. The incident came to light when a student expressed discomfort about attending the school due to threats made by the teacher.
The suspect was taken into custody by the police and subsequently transferred for further legal action. Concerns have been raised about delays in the prosecution process, with allegations of possible interference by authorities. Efforts by a foundation focused on combating gender-based violence to expedite the case have faced obstacles.
Despite attempts to contact the police for updates on the case, there has been limited response. The case has been referred to the Police Gender Unit for handling. The incident serves as a reminder of a similar case where a teacher was sentenced to life imprisonment for a similar offense.
