The players of a Nigerian Premier Football League team, El-Kanemi Warriors, have shared their frightening experience of being attacked by armed robbers while traveling on the Jos-Bauchi road after a match. The incident occurred as they were returning to Maiduguri from Lagos. Some players mentioned that such incidents could be avoided by using air travel or traveling in a well-maintained team bus.
One survivor, who requested anonymity, highlighted that the team bus broke down in Jos, leading to the management hiring two buses, with the one in front being attacked. The players emphasized the need for better transportation to ensure their safety during long journeys.
Another player mentioned the challenges of long trips, noting that despite the risks, they had to continue without breaking the journey due to upcoming fixtures. Despite the ordeal, the team managed to field a team for their next match, which ended in a draw.
The club’s secretary, Bura Mustapha, refrained from commenting on potential government intervention to assist the players. The team had previously faced similar travel difficulties earlier in the year.
Looking ahead, the team is scheduled for more matches, including away games in the southwest region. The challenges faced by El-Kanemi Warriors highlight the need for improved travel arrangements and safety measures for football teams in the league.
