Sex workers seek end to harassment, abuse by security operatives

The Nigeria Sex Workers Association has called on law enforcement authorities to safeguard its members nationwide from mistreatment and violence. In a statement released by the association’s National Coordinator, Amaka Enemo, there is a growing concern over the increase in physical attacks, harassment, and exploitation of sex workers by clients and law enforcement officers. Enemo emphasized the need for law enforcement agencies to respect the rights and humanity of sex workers and shield them from harm. She highlighted that sex workers are not criminals but individuals entitled to security and protection. Ensuring their safety is crucial not only for their well-being but also for the health of communities by preventing the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. The association is advocating for the rights and safety of sex workers and is urging for collaboration from stakeholders, government bodies, NGOs, and the public to address the challenges faced by sex workers. Measures recommended include training for officials, establishing safe reporting channels, holding accountable those responsible for violence or discrimination, launching awareness campaigns, prosecuting offenders, and ensuring justice for victims.
