NSCDC seeks title holders’ collaboration to curb illegal mining

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps is urging verified title holders to manage recovered mining sites to combat illegal mining and increase government revenue. The NSCDC spokesperson emphasized the vital role of legal title holders in restoring lawful operations and supporting mining activities.

The strategy follows the NSCDC’s recovery of over 200 mining sites from illegal miners nationwide, with Mining Marshals appointed by the Federal Government to safeguard mineral resources. Most illegal mining occurs on mineral titles assigned to rightful owners without their consent.

By allowing title holders to reclaim their sites, the NSCDC aims to stop unauthorized activities and boost revenue through royalty payments. The corps is also working with local communities to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal mining and foster collaboration with authorities for sustainable practices.

The NSCDC Commandant General highlighted the significance of the initiative, with numerous arrests made for illegal mining and economic sabotage. By transitioning recovered sites to legitimate operators, the NSCDC is supporting legal mining operations and ensuring the nation’s mineral resources benefit the economy.
