The head of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, announced that the Managing Director of the suspected substandard Deekins Amoxycillin 500mg capsule, Divine Kings Pharmaceutical Limited, Kingsley Ekeanyanwu, is currently in police custody. Adeyeye mentioned during a press briefing in Abuja that NAFDAC is conducting an investigation into the suspected substandard Deekins capsule, which is manufactured by Ecomed Pharma Ltd.
The probe into the capsule was prompted by reports of serious adverse drug reactions experienced by patients nationwide. NAFDAC had issued a recall of the drug due to these reactions associated with a specific batch. The manufacturer, Ecomed Pharma Ltd, claimed to have produced only a limited number of affected packets for registration renewal purposes. However, a significant number of the recalled batch were not manufactured by them.
Samples of the products have been taken for laboratory analysis, and individuals involved in the manufacturing process have been called for further investigation. Adeyeye urged caution among distributors, healthcare providers, and patients, advising them to avoid using the suspected substandard Deekins Amoxycillin 500mg Capsule. She emphasized the importance of obtaining medical products from authorized suppliers and checking their authenticity and physical condition.
Furthermore, Adeyeye warned against the use of the affected lot and instructed those in possession of it to discontinue sales or use, and submit the stock to the nearest NAFDAC office. She advised seeking immediate medical advice if anyone has used the product and experienced adverse reactions. Adeyeye also encouraged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any suspicions of substandard or falsified medicines to NAFDAC and to report adverse events related to medicinal products.
Additionally, she provided contact information for reporting suspicions and adverse events, emphasizing the importance of reporting such incidents promptly. Adeyeye also mentioned that the notice would be shared on the WHO Global Surveillance and Monitoring System.
