Babangida’s ex-Dutch clubs lead €170k crowdfunding for Nigerian

Several Dutch clubs are coming together to support a former player and ex-Nigeria international, Tijani Babangida, who is currently in the Netherlands with his wife for medical treatment following a tragic accident earlier this year.

In the accident that occurred on the Kaduna–Zaria Road in May, Babangida lost family members and sustained injuries along with his wife and maid. After receiving initial treatment in Nigeria, they are now in the Netherlands for further care, with the help of Babangida’s former teammates.

Babangida’s wife has undergone a major surgery on her face, with more procedures planned, while Babangida is focusing on his knee rehabilitation after a surgery.

Financial challenges have arisen due to the extensive medical expenses, with a total of at least €170,000 needed for treatment and related costs. Babangida expressed gratitude towards Ajax, VVV, and Roda for their collective effort to raise funds through crowdfunding to cover his wife’s medical bills.

Babangida, a former Olympic gold medallist, praised his former clubs and teammates for their support during this difficult time, highlighting the assistance provided for medical appointments and rehabilitation sessions.

Having played for Ajax, Roda JC, and VVV Venlo during his career, Babangida’s tenure included winning titles and making significant contributions to the clubs.
