Sanwo-Olu okays 10-year jail for organ harvesters

A recent development in Lagos State involved the signing of a law by the Governor, which targets human organ harvesting. Offenders of this law could face up to 10 years in prison. This law was part of a set of five new laws introduced by the government, demonstrating their dedication to the well-being and security of Lagos residents.

The Governor signed these bills into law, emphasizing their commitment to the prosperity of every Lagosian. Alongside the Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplantation Law, other laws included the Lagos State Enforcement Training Institute Law, Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Law, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Law.

During a press briefing, the significance of these laws was elaborated on by the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice. He highlighted the importance of these laws in ensuring progress, justice, and opportunity within Lagos.

The Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplantation Law specifically addresses issues related to illegal organ trade and unethical medical practices. It establishes a regulatory framework to govern organ harvesting and transplantation in Lagos State, aiming to prevent exploitation and uphold ethical standards in medical procedures.

The law prohibits unauthorized organ harvesting and the advertising of human organs for sale. Violators could face severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to 10 years or fines reaching N10m.

The government’s focus on addressing citizens’ needs, protecting their rights, and ensuring their well-being is evident in these newly enacted laws.
