The Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, recently emphasized the need for a centralized criminal registry system in Nigeria to enhance the country’s justice sector. She highlighted the importance of technology in improving justice delivery and addressing inefficiencies in case management.
During a strategic meeting in Abuja, it was discussed that the lack of a centralized criminal registry has hindered effective justice delivery by limiting access to key stakeholders like prosecutors and judges. The meeting aimed to establish a justice information management system to address these challenges.
Various law enforcement agencies have made efforts to digitize their operations, but there is a lack of coordination and a unified platform for national data management. The goal is to develop a cohesive strategy to collect, store, share, and manage data across different agencies to expedite the dispensation of justice.
Efforts have been made in the past to integrate technology in the justice sector, including an attempt to establish an automated case management system. However, capacity challenges hindered the completion of the project. Establishing a National Database through the Justice Information Management System is seen as a transformative shift in justice administration.
The establishment of a robust Justice Information Management System is seen as crucial in improving transparency, accelerating case processing, and promoting equitable access to justice. By providing a centralized platform for information sharing and collaboration, the system aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability in the justice sector.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime expressed support for Nigeria in overcoming data management challenges and emphasized the importance of integrating technology into justice administration. The UNODC pledged to provide technical support to help Nigeria achieve a more effective digitalized justice system.
