P&ID: Govt must safeguard future contracts, says Jedy-Agba

The Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice emphasized the need for the government to learn from past contract issues like the P&ID debacle. She stressed the importance of implementing measures to safeguard the government in future agreements. Other countries engaging in partnerships with Nigeria are usually well-prepared for contract failures, highlighting the necessity for Nigeria to do the same.

During the unveiling of the Federal Complex Contracts Process and Administration in Abuja, she discussed the significance of enhancing operational efficiency and reducing financial risks. She expressed concerns about the lack of clarity and developmental challenges stemming from government contracts, despite existing laws like the Public Procurement Act and the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

The Solicitor General underscored the importance of legal advisers in preventing failed contracts and their adverse effects. She urged staff members to take their responsibilities seriously and ensure the quality of agreements brought forth. Collaboration was also highlighted as crucial for effective project implementation on behalf of the government.

A deputy director from the Ministry of Justice explained that the FCAS aims to guide the ministry and its departments on navigating contracts and achieving successful outcomes. The initiative seeks to prevent unnecessary projects and focus on feasible and strategically planned endeavors.

The Chief Consultant to the ministry on FCAS reinforced the government’s commitment to proactive measures through the Ministry of Justice to avoid a recurrence of past contract issues. The new approach involves strategic engagement in projects, utilizing specialists to minimize risks and ensure proper processing and recording of contracts.

By taking proactive measures and engaging strategically in high-valued projects, the government aims to reduce contract failures and avoid significant financial losses in the future.
