NCC okays MTN’s disconnection of exchange telecommunications over debt

The Nigerian Communications Commission has authorized the disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications Ltd. from MTN Nigeria’s network due to outstanding interconnect charges. This decision was communicated in a public notice issued by the commission’s Public Affairs Director, Mr. Reuben Muoka. Exchange Telecommunications is recognized as a local and international interconnect carrier.

The NCC confirmed that Exchange Telecommunications was duly informed of the disconnection application and provided with an opportunity to present its case. After review, the commission found that Exchange had no justifiable reason for failing to settle the interconnect charges.

The disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications from MTN aligns with the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 and the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators from 2012. MTN will cease routing voice and data traffic through Exchange and will seek alternative channels for interconnection with other network providers.

The disconnection will remain in effect until further notice from the commission.
