Another royal family faults choice of Owa Obokun-elect

The Arimoro Royal Family in Ijeshaland, Osun State, has expressed dissatisfaction with the recent selection process of the Owa Obokun-elect, Prince Adesuyi Hasstrup, on Friday, December 27. They believe the process was flawed, went against Ijesha tradition, and was a misuse of legal procedures.

Prince Hasstrup, from the Ajimoko Royal Family, was chosen by the kingmakers during a meeting at the Ilesa West Local Government Secretariat, Ilesa. The state governor, Ademola Adeleke, later approved his selection.

In a statement by the Arimoro Royal Family, they condemned the selection process and indicated their intention to take legal action. They highlighted that the process disregarded a court order that had restrained the selection of the Owa Obokun until a pending lawsuit by the Ofokutu Royal lineage was resolved.

The family criticized the actions of the kingmakers and the state government, labeling it as disrespectful to Ijesha heritage. They vowed to contest the selection through lawful means, emphasizing the importance of upholding traditions and respecting the judicial system in choosing the next Owa Obokun.

The statement outlined various irregularities in the selection process, including financial demands on aspirants, lack of adherence to cultural practices, and the exclusion of certain royal lineages in decision-making. The family questioned the swift approval of Hasstrup by the governor, alleging collusion between some kingmakers and the government.

Prince Michael Adewale (KMA) Arimoro, the family’s candidate for the Owa Obokun stool, also raised concerns during a press conference about the integrity of the selection process and urged for a transparent and lawful procedure that respects tradition and the will of the people.

The Arimoro Royal Family stressed the need for unity in protecting their heritage, preserving the significance of Ifa traditions, and ensuring justice prevails in the selection of the Owa Obokun. They called for a collective effort to maintain respect, integrity, and harmony within the community.
