The Lagos State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress has announced that council elections will take place in all 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas in 2025. This clarification was made by the APC Chairman in a statement addressing speculations surrounding the status of the 37 LCDAs in the state.
The party emphasized that elections will be held in both the Local Government Councils and the Local Council Development Areas next year. The chairman highlighted the positive impact of the LCDAs in bringing development to grassroots levels and stressed the importance of their existence.
The APC acknowledged the significant infrastructural projects undertaken by the LCDAs, such as road construction, drainage systems, schools, housing projects, and social service interventions. They also noted the collaborative efforts with the state government on various initiatives like waste management, drainage maintenance, and security.
The statement aimed to dispel any further speculations regarding the upcoming local government elections and urged party members and residents to maintain peaceful coexistence in the state. Additionally, the House of Assembly’s proposed Local Government Administration Bill, which seeks to replace LCDAs with Area Administrative Councils, has faced opposition from political stakeholders. The bill is currently under consideration in the House following a Supreme Court judgment on local government financial autonomy.
