Tinubu hails Warri refinery restart as boost for Nigeria’s future

President Tinubu has expressed his approval of the reopening of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, considering it a significant accomplishment in 2024 that has boosted confidence in his leadership among Nigerians.

The president emphasized the relaunch of the 125,000-barrel-per-day Warri refinery as a notable event to conclude the year, underscoring his administration’s dedication to reviving all four refineries in the country to their full operational capacity.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu praised the NNPCL, led by Mele Kyari, for their efforts in achieving this milestone. He commended the team for their hard work in restoring national pride and positioning Nigeria as a key player in crude oil refining in Africa.

The resumption of operations at the Warri Refinery comes shortly after the Port Harcourt Refinery also resumed operations. The rehabilitation of the country’s four state-owned refineries was initiated during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that with the Warri Refinery operating at 60% capacity, his administration’s energy efficiency and security goals are progressing well. He reiterated the commitment to enhancing local refining capacity and establishing Nigeria as a hub for downstream industrial activities on the continent.

The focus of the Warri Refinery will be on producing essential products like Straight Run Kerosene (SRK), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and heavy and light Naphtha. Tinubu urged the NNPCL to expedite the repair of the Kaduna Refinery and the second Port Harcourt Refinery to further solidify Nigeria’s position in the global energy sector.
