Lagos-Calabar highway: Diasporans insist on Tinubu’s intervention

Members of the Nigerian diaspora are calling for President Bola Tinubu’s assistance regarding the controversy surrounding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road diversion affecting the Okun-Ajah community in Lagos State.

Stella Okengwu, speaking on behalf of the diaspora, expressed concerns in a statement released recently.

Okengwu, representing WinHomes Global Estate, criticized the Ministry of Works for diverting the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road construction in the Okun Ajah area, resulting in the destruction of properties valued at millions of naira.

“Acting on the President’s call for Foreign Direct Investment, Okengwu and numerous diasporan Nigerians invested substantial amounts in the Nigerian real estate sector,” the statement revealed.

In a plea to President Tinubu, Okengwu urged intervention to resolve the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road diversion crisis, emphasizing the need to protect the investments of diasporan Nigerians contributing to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.

Reports indicate that some Nigerians in the diaspora rejected monetary compensation for the realignment of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.

The estate was demolished in October to accommodate the ongoing coastal road construction project by the Federal Ministry of Works.

Okengwu condemned the demolition and called for adherence to the original 2006 gazetted route that safeguarded investment and property rights. She emphasized that all necessary processes were duly followed, including obtaining approvals from the Lagos State Government before commencing construction.
