Abia State Governor has implemented a ban on all forms of payments in primary and secondary schools in the state to ensure compulsory school attendance for children. The governor has introduced an imprest account system for school principals and headteachers to manage school operations with monthly allowances.
In his New Year speech, the governor emphasized the elimination of all school fees, including PTA levies, in public schools. He stated that headteachers and school principals would receive specific monthly sums to oversee daily school operations, warning against extortion or denial of educational opportunities.
The governor reaffirmed the state’s commitment to enforcing mandatory school attendance for school-age children and allocating a significant portion of the budget to education and health sectors. He emphasized the transformation of schools into centers of excellence for effective teaching and learning.
Additionally, the governor highlighted the government’s focus on security and readiness to combat any threats to residents’ safety. Plans for economic support for vulnerable individuals and families were also announced, showcasing the government’s dedication to social welfare and wealth redistribution.
Furthermore, the governor pledged to enhance the state’s investor-friendly environment, particularly in the agricultural sector, and acknowledged the crucial role of artisans and blue-collar workers in Abia’s development. Efforts to support individuals with disabilities and promote tax compliance were also mentioned as part of the state’s agenda for the New Year.
