MOSOP demands action on trapped crude oil, honour for Saro-Wiwa, others

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People expressed concern over 500,000 barrels of crude oil production trapped in the Ogoni soil since Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria left the area in 1993. This was highlighted during the Ogoni Day Celebration in Bori, Khana Local Government Area. The group emphasized the need to address underdevelopment in Ogoni due to the halted oil production.

MOSOP leaders outlined their development blueprint and expectations, focusing on recovering the trapped oil, restoring underground water, and promoting peace and development in the region. They made demands including assigning the Ogoni block to an indigenous operator, clearing the names of Ogoni martyrs, and establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in the area.

The group remains hopeful for Ogoni’s future and calls for unity and patience. Representatives from the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project reassured their commitment to environmental sustainability in Ogoni and urged the community to remain peaceful and patient.
