Mother arrested in FCT for abandoning newborn over financial hardship

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command recently arrested a woman, identified as Khadija Ali, for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby near Crush Rock in Mpape, Abuja. This incident was reported after the baby, believed to be just a day old, was found wrapped in cloth along a bush path. The police responded to a distress call and rescued the infant, taking them to a local health care center for evaluation. Medical personnel confirmed the baby was in stable condition.

Following a tip-off, Khadija Ali was apprehended and confessed to abandoning her child, citing her inability to care for the baby due to her husband’s abandonment. The police spokesperson condemned the act as a serious violation of the child’s rights and stated that Ali would be charged under relevant sections of the Child Rights Act, 2003.

The FCT Police Command expressed its strong disapproval of child abandonment and assured the public of their commitment to safeguarding vulnerable members of society. The rescued baby will be placed in the care of the Department of Social Welfare, while the mother will face prosecution once investigations are completed.
