The head of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms recently underscored the necessity for broad consultations regarding the proposed tax changes, despite facing resistance from certain northern governors. In an interview, the chairman refuted claims of insufficient consultations with stakeholders, clarifying that multiple meetings with governors were canceled while interactions with state officials and various sectors were held. He mentioned the involvement of over 20 government bodies, the private sector, students from various universities, and engagements with governors. The committee also made efforts to engage with diverse groups, including Muslim clerics, to explain the reforms’ implications and address concerns. While some northern governors oppose the tax reforms, emphasizing potential negative impacts on state revenues, the chairman stressed the importance of a comprehensive and fair tax system for national progress. The committee remains dedicated to addressing issues and continuing discussions with stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of the reforms. There were also statements made by a senior northern politician during a televised program, suggesting discrepancies within the committee regarding the decision-making process.
