In a recent ceremony, the Aholu of Kweme Kingdom, Oba Sejiro James, officially appointed Alhaji Mohammed Umar as the Seriki Fulani of Badagry in Lagos State. The event gathered Fulani socio-cultural leaders from the South-West and neighboring Benin Republic.
During the installation ceremony held at Sito Gbethrome Community along the Semé expressway, Oba James presented Umar with traditional staff and beads, underscoring the peaceful nature of the Fulani people.
Oba James emphasized the importance of proactive leadership in resolving community issues, particularly tensions between pastoralists and farmers. He encouraged Umar to appoint representatives across various Badagry communities to promote harmonious coexistence.
Alhaji Saidu Yusuf, Chairman of the APC Arewa Communities in Lagos, advocated for collaboration between Fulani and Yoruba communities, prioritizing unity over politics for community development.
Alhaji Mohammed Laba, the Seriki Fulani of Abeokuta and Chairman of Meyiti Allah, South-West, stressed the role of traditional leaders in conflict resolution and expressed happiness at Umar’s installation, urging him to deter criminal activities among pastoralists.
Alhaji Aminu Dogara, Chairman of the Arewa Council of Chiefs in Lagos, reaffirmed Arewa leaders’ dedication to the welfare of all residents in the state. Oba Olusegun Wheto of Dale Whedako prayed for wisdom for the new Seriki Fulani to lead effectively.
In his acceptance speech, Alhaji Mohammed Umar pledged to address critical issues such as poverty, education, and healthcare while preserving cultural heritage. He emphasized the importance of upholding traditions alongside progress and innovation, urging his people to comply with community regulations on cattle rearing and support Badagry’s development.
The event was graced by distinguished personalities, including Oba Adekanmi Oyekanmi, the Alapa of Apa Kingdom, traditional chiefs, and representatives from the Nigeria Police and Army.
