Handwashing, isolation facilities collapse as fear of new virus outbreak heightens

In light of global concerns over the rapid spread of Human Metapneumovirus and the potential for another pandemic following the COVID-19 outbreak, Nigeria’s readiness for future disease outbreaks is called into question. A recent investigation reveals a significant decline in essential disease prevention measures, such as handwashing facilities and isolation protocols, across hospitals and schools nationwide.

During the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, both federal and state governments implemented various evidence-based disease prevention measures, including the provision of handwashing stations in public places to curb the spread of the virus. However, a recent assessment by Healthwise indicates a stark abandonment of these critical safety measures, leaving the country ill-prepared for emergent infectious diseases like Human Metapneumovirus.

Despite the surge in HMPV cases globally, particularly in China, Nigerian health facilities seem unconcerned about reinstating necessary disease prevention measures to mitigate the country’s susceptibility to infections. The absence of key safety protocols, such as handwashing stations, sanitizers, and social distancing measures, raises significant concerns about the country’s ability to handle a potential outbreak effectively.

Infectious disease experts emphasize the importance of practicing recommended safety procedures, such as regular handwashing, avoiding crowded areas, and wearing face masks, especially for individuals with compromised immunity and the elderly. However, visits to various hospitals and schools reveal a lack of preparedness and the neglect of basic safety measures critical for disease control.

Furthermore, the state of isolation centers and laboratories built during the COVID-19 outbreak paints a concerning picture of neglect and missed opportunities. The abandonment of these facilities, exemplified by the dilapidated state of the 150-bed Mainland Infectious Disease Isolation Centre in Lagos, underscores the need for sustained readiness and preparedness for future health crises.

Medical experts stress the importance of maintaining functional laboratories, isolation centers, and essential safety protocols to effectively handle potential outbreaks like HMPV. Revitalizing these facilities, enforcing hygiene practices, and enhancing surveillance and notification systems are crucial steps in safeguarding public health and mitigating the risks posed by infectious diseases.
