The electoral body has reported the removal of 7,746 deceased voters from the national voter register across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory by December 2022.
The Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Etta-Messi, shared this information recently.
The cleaning of the voter register is a standard procedure conducted before each general election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
During the post-2023 general election review in December 2024, INEC acknowledged challenges faced in purging the voter register despite enhancements in the registration process that saw the addition of 12,298,944 new registrants.
A significant obstacle remains the difficulty in eliminating deceased individuals due to deficiencies in official death records.
INEC also addressed the issue of multiple registrations by implementing the Automated Biometric Identification System, which detected and removed 2,780,756 cases of invalid registrations, constituting 22.6% of all new registrants nationwide.
Furthermore, concerns were raised about the declining voter turnout, with the 2023 elections recording a turnout of 27.5%, a decrease from 35.6% in 2019.
Suggestions from stakeholders included enhancing collaboration with relevant agencies like the National Population Commission and the National Identity Management Commission to identify deceased voters.
There were also proposals to suspend individuals who have not participated in the previous three elections and compel them to validate their registration.
