The Minister of Transportation emphasized the importance of increased funding for the rail sector to enhance the country’s rail transportation system. He highlighted the impact of inadequate funding on the ministry’s ability to execute essential projects. This was discussed during the Ministry’s budget proposal presentation to the National Assembly Joint Committee on Land Transport.
The minister stressed the necessity of additional funding to achieve the goals set out in Nigeria’s Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan. He acknowledged the challenges posed by funding gaps, especially given the country’s declining revenue. The ministry is working on various projects, such as the Nigerian Railway Modernization Project, but faces obstacles in securing necessary funding.
Appealing to the committee and the National Assembly, the minister sought support for ongoing projects and the initiation of new ones to revitalize the nation’s transportation sector. He also clarified the ministry’s stance on the construction of a superhighway from Lagos to Abuja, explaining the process required for such projects to move forward.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Land Transport echoed the minister’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of expanding the rail network and providing adequate funding for railway modernization. He highlighted the significance of railways as a reliable and cost-effective mode of transportation compared to road infrastructure.
