A group of civil society organizations in Nigeria, specifically in Akwa Ibom State, has made a plea to the Rivers State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria, including the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency and other relevant bodies, to address the environmental challenges arising from an extensive oil spill in Bukuma waterways in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The spill, originating from the wellhead of Oil Mining Lease 15, which is reportedly operated by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, resulted in a fire that caused significant damage to aquatic life in Bukuma, Asari-Tolu Local Government Area.
During a press conference in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Director of the Center for Human Rights and Accountability Network, on behalf of various CSOs, emphasized the coalition’s dedication to upholding democracy and good governance throughout Nigeria. The spill not only presents a severe environmental risk and endangers the local population, but also infringes on their right to a healthy environment and quality of life.
The coalition urged the Federal Government of Nigeria, specifically the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, the Rivers State Government, and other relevant authorities to promptly address the situation and mitigate its impact.
Additionally, the CSOs praised the Inspector-General of Police and other security agency heads for ensuring peace, particularly during festive periods, and called for continued efforts in maintaining security. They also advocated for the urgent dualization of federal highways in the South-South Region, highlighting specific routes like the Calabar-Itu Highway and the Port Harcourt-Eleme-Ikot Abasi Highway.
Concerns were also expressed regarding the ongoing political discord in Rivers State between the current Governor and a former governor. The CSOs encouraged the political leaders to prioritize peace and collaboration for the advancement and prosperity of Rivers State and its residents.
