S’Court hears Wike, Fubara loyalists’ appeals February 10

The Supreme Court has set February 10, 2025, as the date to address two lawsuits brought by the All Progressives Congress concerning the validity of the local government elections conducted in Rivers State in 2024. Additionally, the court will hear five other cases related to the political crisis in Rivers State.

The crisis in the state began in October 2023 when a faction loyal to the former governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, attempted to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara. In response, Fubara sealed off the Assembly complex. Subsequently, there was a shift in party allegiance within the Assembly, leading to legal disputes and challenges regarding the legitimacy of decisions made.

Various courts, including the Rivers State High Court, Federal High Court, and Court of Appeal, have been involved in deliberating on these matters. The Supreme Court has now consolidated four appeals related to the Rivers State House of Assembly for easier hearing and judgment.

The legal disputes arose following the local government elections held on October 5, 2024, in Rivers State. The APC contested the elections, while factions loyal to different political figures made strategic decisions regarding participation. Legal battles ensued, with different courts issuing conflicting orders and judgments.

The Supreme Court is now poised to address these issues, with a panel of Justices leading the proceedings. The parties involved have been directed to submit their arguments before the scheduled hearing date to facilitate a smooth and efficient process.
