The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has approved a license for the construction of a new refinery. MRO Energy Limited, an energy company, has been granted approval to build a 10,000 barrels per stream day refinery in Imode, Ughelli, Delta State. This announcement follows a recent approval given to Process Design and Development Limited for a 27,000 barrels per day refinery in Dole-Wure, Akko area of Gombe State.
The NMDPRA officially presented the license to MRO Energy Limited for the establishment of the new refinery. With this development, Nigeria now boasts a total of 11 modular and regular refineries, increasing the nation’s refining capacity. Additionally, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria is collaborating with partners to set up a new refinery with an initial capacity of 50,000 barrels per day.
Despite the growth in refinery numbers, many existing refineries are not operating at full capacity or efficiently. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has set a daily oil production target of 770,500 billion for domestic refineries.
