DNA-Harley and Rainbow Specialised Laboratories, a renowned molecular laboratory based in Lagos, has proposed the implementation of mandatory DNA paternity tests during birth registration in Nigeria. Recent statistics from the laboratory reveal that a significant number of men who undergo paternity tests in Nigeria are not the biological fathers of their purported children.
The discussion around paternity testing has intensified following notable cases, such as the widely discussed paternity test situation involving a deceased Nigerian musician. This has sparked debates on the credibility of paternal claims and the complexities that can arise when uncertainty surrounds fatherhood.
A DNA paternity test is a scientific process used to establish biological parentage by comparing genetic material from the potential father and the child. The Managing Director of the laboratory emphasized the accuracy of the test and highlighted common reasons why individuals seek paternity tests, including doubts about paternity, inheritance concerns, and legal disputes.
The laboratory has noticed a rise in requests for paternity tests, with a significant percentage of men discovering they are not the biological fathers of the children they presumed were theirs. The Director emphasized the importance of involving the mother in the testing process for more precise results.
Advocates for mandatory DNA paternity testing in Nigeria argue that it could help mitigate cases of paternity fraud and provide clarity in family matters. They suggest that implementing such testing could promote transparency within families and offer a stable environment for children and parents. Additionally, they recommend making DNA paternity testing more affordable and accessible to the general populace.
