The former Fox News co-host Pete Hegseth was narrowly confirmed as the Pentagon chief by the US Senate on Friday. Despite allegations of various issues like alcohol abuse, sexual misconduct, and concerns about his leadership abilities, he secured the position.
With a 50-50 tie in the Senate, J.D. Vance had to cast the deciding vote, marking only the second time a vice president intervened to save a cabinet nominee. Hegseth’s confirmation comes at a critical time with conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and increased military presence at the US-Mexico border.
Hegseth, a former Army National Guard officer and Fox News co-host, is known for his combative media personality and loyalty, traits valued by Trump. Supporters believe his experience in Afghanistan and Iraq provides him with unique insights to lead the Defense Department effectively.
Although lacking experience in managing an organization of the Defense Department’s magnitude, Republicans approved Hegseth’s nomination. Allegations of financial mismanagement and personal misconduct did not deter his confirmation. Hegseth faced criticism during his confirmation hearing but dismissed it as a coordinated smear campaign.
Despite Trump’s endorsement of Hegseth as a “very, very good man,” three Republican senators voted against him citing concerns about his past behaviors and judgment. An affidavit from his former sister-in-law raised further allegations of alcohol abuse and aggressive behavior, adding to the controversy surrounding his confirmation.
Hegseth’s confirmation hearing also touched on his views on diversity and inclusion policies, with him opposing such initiatives within the military. He clarified his stance on women serving in combat roles, stating that they should have access as long as they meet high standards.
In the coming weeks, more of Trump’s nominees, including Kash Patel for FBI director, Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence, and Robert F Kennedy Jr for secretary of health and human services, will face Senate hearings.
