A tragic incident occurred in Enugu State, resulting in the death of 18 people and injuries to 13 others due to a tanker explosion at Ugwu Onyeama on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. The accident involved a fuel-laden tanker colliding with a water truck, leading to a devastating explosion. According to reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps, the crash involved multiple vehicles, including cars and a tricycle.
The tanker’s brake failure caused it to lose control and collide with other vehicles, resulting in a fire that claimed the lives of 18 individuals. Rescue efforts were hindered by the intensity of the fire, making it challenging to save those trapped in the vehicles. Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific, with the fire spreading rapidly and consuming everything in its path.
Authorities, including the police, fire service, and emergency response teams, were involved in the rescue operation and traffic management. Efforts were made to divert traffic and clear the wreckage from the site. The incident underscored the importance of prioritizing safety measures in the transportation of petroleum products.
Following the tragic event, calls were made for an investigation into the frequent tanker explosions in the country by notable figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-governor Peter Obi, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki. They emphasized the need for stricter safety regulations and proactive measures to prevent future loss of lives and property in such accidents.
