The Anambra State Police Command recently apprehended four suspects, including a woman, for their alleged involvement in setting fire to a 74-year-old woman in a wheelchair. The disturbing incident took place in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area. The police recovered the charred remains of the victim, her wheelchair, and a casket the following day.
According to the Anambra State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects had planned to bury the victim after the heinous act, but law enforcement intervened in time. Among the arrested individuals are a 21-year-old lady named Chinenye Ekwenugo from Ifitedunu, alongside three other suspects from Abagana – Uzochukwu Okeke, Fidel Anayo, and Ikenna Anene.
Chinenye confessed during police interrogation that her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Igwe, who is currently evading arrest, and three others orchestrated the crime. The police are actively pursuing Ifeanyi Igwe, and the deceased’s body has been taken for autopsy to establish the cause of death.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has urged for calm and directed the transfer of the case to the Homicide Section for a thorough investigation. Further details will be shared as the case progresses.
In a separate incident, the Anti-Cult Unit of the Anambra State Police Command apprehended a 25-year-old man named Maduka Okoye and seized three expended gun cartridges in Ezichike Community of Abagana. Okoye, a self-proclaimed member of the ‘Baggars Confraternity,’ revealed that he was attacked by a rival cult group, the Axe Men Confraternity, while at a local beer parlour.
The police swiftly responded to the situation and are currently working to arrest the remaining suspects and identified members of the rival cult group involved in the violent confrontation.
