Oyo targets seed sector revamp to boost food security

The government of Oyo State recently highlighted the issue of low-quality seeds as a major challenge in the agricultural sector. It emphasized the importance of improving the seed sector to enhance agricultural productivity and increase harvest yields.

The Oyo State Seed Coordinating Committee was re-inaugurated to address this concern. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development emphasized the crucial role of quality seeds in agricultural success and warned that neglecting this issue could hinder efforts to make agriculture a profitable source of income.

The committee and key stakeholders met to discuss introducing superior seed varieties to farmers to boost agricultural productivity. It was stressed that the committee members must fulfill their duties effectively to reshape the seed sector’s future, improve agricultural productivity, and ensure food security.

The Commissioner commended Governor Makinde for his leadership in agricultural development and highlighted ongoing efforts to distribute hybrid seeds and liquid fertilizers to farmers across all local government areas in the state. The government pledged to support the committee in achieving its objectives.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development acknowledged the meeting as a significant step in addressing food security challenges in the state.
