The Lagos State Government has announced plans to begin clearing stalls and shanties located under Apongbon Bridge and on the setback of Savage/Elegbata/Bombata drainage channel on Lagos Island. This action comes after a 48-hour notice was issued to the stall owners and traders last week.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the removal of these structures is necessary to ensure proper drainage and benefit all residents. Enforcement activities are scheduled to commence on Tuesday to remove any extensions obstructing public infrastructure within the drainage channels.
Wahab emphasized that buildings not erected on drainage alignments will be spared, but there will be zero tolerance for stall owners or traders attempting to return to the cleared setbacks. The commissioner also expressed concern over contractors dumping materials on constructed drains, which hinders the flow of stormwater.
