JUST IN: EFCC, bidders disagree over car auction

The recent car auction conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has stirred up controversy among bidders who have raised concerns about alleged irregularities in the process. The auction, which took place between January 20 and January 27, 2025, saw bids reaching exorbitant amounts, causing dissatisfaction among participants.

Various social media platforms were flooded with screenshots showing bids ranging from N1 billion to N330 billion for vehicles like Lexus jeeps and SUVs. Some bidders expressed frustration over what they perceived as unfair practices during the auction.

Users shared their experiences online, with claims of bids being tampered with, names being swapped, and technical errors disrupting the process. Allegations of collusion and manipulation among bidders were also brought to light, suggesting an undermining of the auction’s integrity.

In response to the accusations, the EFCC spokesperson clarified that the auction was conducted by licensed auctioneers, distancing the agency from any interference in the process. He emphasized the need for evidence to support claims of compromise and assured the public of the transparency of the auction.

The auction, which featured over 850 cars forfeited to the Federal Government, was part of the EFCC’s efforts to recover assets linked to financial crimes. The commission outlined that the auction was carried out in compliance with relevant laws and invited the public to participate in the transparent and fair process held in different locations across the country.
