FG hails US for approving emergency humanitarian waiver for HIV treatment

The recent approval of an emergency humanitarian waiver by the United States has been acknowledged by the Federal Government. This waiver enables individuals living with HIV to continue receiving treatment across 55 countries, including Nigeria. The US Department of State issued an executive order for a 90-day funding pause on foreign assistance, impacting services supported by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Despite this, a waiver has been granted to ensure uninterrupted access to HIV treatment.

In response to this development, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS expressed gratitude for the waiver and emphasized the need for Nigeria to focus on self-reliance in funding its HIV response. The government aims to enhance domestic resource mobilization efforts to achieve its strategic goals in combating HIV and mitigate the risks associated with potential shifts in foreign aid policies.

Nigeria has the highest number of individuals living with HIV in the West and Central African region. Various global partners have collaborated with the government to enhance HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services over the years. PEPFAR, a significant contributor to Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS response, has played a crucial role in sustaining treatment programs in the country.

It is essential for individuals to continue accessing HIV treatment services at designated centers nationwide. The government also called upon state governors, private sector entities, lawmakers, civil society organizations, the media, and other stakeholders to maintain their commitment and support towards combating HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.
