Impeached South Korean President Yoon in court again for hearings on removal

The recently arrested and impeached President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, faced court proceedings regarding his potential removal from office. Yoon, a former prosecutor, caused political upheaval by declaring martial law, which was swiftly overturned by the opposition-led parliament. Yoon was detained on insurrection charges, marking a historic arrest of a sitting South Korean president. Despite being in detention, he attended impeachment hearings at the Constitutional Court. If the impeachment is upheld, a new presidential election must be held within 60 days. Yoon has denied allegations of instructing military commanders to remove lawmakers from parliament. Testimonies from former military commanders and an ex-spy agency official are expected during the hearings. Yoon, 64, has been indicted as the alleged “ringleader of the insurrection” and faces a separate criminal trial with potential severe penalties.
